Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.
Proverbs 13:10 NIV
Yesterday we considered how Proverbs 4: 20-21 referenced paying attention to what is being said by turning our ears to the words and actively listening to what is said which leads to wisdom and positive action.
Today's verse from Proverbs is similar. The priority, notes 'strife' and its association with 'pride.' 'Strife,' is classed as an angry disagreement the cause of which could be due to 'pride,' a feeling of self importance and a belief that you might be better than the other person. With this perspective, we are unlikely to listen to what someone else has to say, missing the information conveyed. It doesn't allow for wisdom and information and opportunity are lost.
The text reveals the remedy for this via the word 'but.' Everything which follows the word 'but' is more important than that which preceded it. In this instance, it is taking advice which provides wisdom. By 'turning our ears' and 'paying attention,' we can listen to the advice which results in wisdom. The Bible is consistent.
To actively learn, gain insight and help others, we need to listen. In so doing, we may realise that we have a false sense of pride and that communication is a two way process.
Pride before a fall, wisdom above it all.
