Anyone who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
Job 6:14 NIV
It is unknown who wrote the book of Job but the author is sending a clear message.
In Linguistic Analysis, we consider what isn't said in addition to what is. The verse starts with 'Anyone' as opposed to 'Everyone.' There is a subtle difference. 'Anyone' is wider reaching, referring to any one person whilst 'everyone' refers to all people in a group.
Any one person who 'withholds' or refuses to give kindness to a friend, 'forsakes the fear of the Almighty.'
To fear something is seen as being afraid of something which might be dangerous, or could cause pain or harm.
The 'fear of the Almighty' differs from the above in having a profound reverence, awe and deep respect for God's holiness, power and justice which in turn leads to humility, wisdom and obedience and not dread and fear which can often be how fearing God is perceived.
It shows an awareness of his presence and judgement and a desire to align life with his will.
It is the above which is given up by a lack of kindness.
The simple message of the verse is to 'Be Kind.'
