All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Matthew 5:37 NIV
Today's verse is a simple instruction. It imparts advice.
In linguistic analysis, the shortest answer in context is the best. When asked a closed question where either a simple 'yes' or 'no' is required, we count the number of extra words used beyond this as being sensitive. The longer the answer, the greater the sensitivity. It is here we gain a lot of additional information which can serve any number of purposes if we are listening.
It is sensitive because a 'yes' or 'no' provides clarity. Anything beyond this can seek to convince, minimise, justify etc The extra words used become necessary for the person saying them to say them.
The following also attest to the above:
Proverbs 17:28
Proverbs 10:19
Ecclesiastes 5:3
These verses highlight that prudence and self control in speech are essential and being silent can lead to greater wisdom and understanding.
